The Fall Of Nintendo

Nintendo became a household name in the early 80s when they released their Nintendo Entertainment System NES. They entered the market back then at a crucial moment. The industry of gaming consoles was actually in a kind of crisis after several Atari gaming consoles failed miserably. There were those who were predicting that the era of gaming consoles was at its end.

Then came Nintendo with the NES and suddenly the whole industry just received a shot in the arm. The company became the industry leader and it came out with such products like the Super NES and the N64 with each offering significant developments when it comes to the graphics of the games and other features. They also came out with amazing titles that have long since become icons.

Few years passed before the leadership of Nintendo in the gaming industry was even seriously challenged. That happened only when Sony released the PlayStation and Microsoft came out with the Xbox. These two devices used CDs instead of cartridges which is something that didn’t really impact the consumers right away but it did have a tremendous effect on developers of the games. The use of discs makes it a lot more easy for them to create games.

The biggest problem is that Nintendo did not respond to these challenges right away. When they did finally decided to release a device that adopted these changes it did not amount to much. I guess that marks the beginning of the end for Nintendo. They are still failing to make any changes that can allow then to adapt to the developments that are happening right now.

Their efforts to stop the use of the r4 cards for their portable consoles and their refusal other forms of distribution for their software is a good sign of the company’s inflexible determination to stick to proven but dated business models.
